What are reed diffusers? What are reed diffusers used for? How important are reed diffusers in aromatherapy and home fragrances? How are reed diffusers used? Here are just a few questions about reed diffusers. Reed diffusers are a way to bring a nice scent to your home, office or any space that could use a little freshening. To put it in plain words, take a glass container (jar, vase, bottle, etc.), fill it with a specially scented oil, then take wooden sticks, called reeds, and put them into the oil. That’s it. Very simple! That’s all we initially need to know about reed diffusers. Yet there is a lot more information to know about reed diffusers.
First we should talk about the reeds and the diffuser oils. The reeds should be made of rattan as they are made up of channels, a bunch of channels. When you insert the reeds into the specially blended diffuser oil, this goes up through the channels. The oil is supposed to go up by itself naturally and then it is released into the air through the evaporation process. Bamboo chutes or skewers are not so good, as bamboo has nodes not channels and because of this the oils will be prevented from going up to the top, making vaporization more difficult, even impossible. The specially scented oils are made of reed diffusers bases with fragrance oils added to them. There are diffuser oils designed especially for use in reed diffusers. Make sure you buy those kinds of diffuser oils.
Actually the best diffuser oils are made with uncut fragrance oils blended with a base which has no alcohols or dipropylene glycol in it. The problem with an alcohol content of the base is that it is very flammable, which makes the fragrance oil to evaporate too fast. As a result, you will have to buy more oils very soon. Good diffuser oils are supposed to last about one month per ounce. On the other hand, dipropylene glycol is used to thin out fragrances and is somewhat thick to travel up the channels of reed diffusers.
The other important component of reed diffusers is the glass container, whether it is a bottle or a glass. It is quite obvious why the reed diffusers containers are to be made of glass. Actually any glass container that is tall enough to support the reed diffusers is good. Plastic does not make a good reed diffuser container since it is not formulated to be used with oils.
Finally let us see how reed diffusers can be used. You should flip the reeds about once a week as this will start the fragrancing process again as the oil is pulled up by the reeds. Do not re-use the reeds; change the reeds every time you change the oil. Because of the dust that may get inside the channels, you had better change the reeds once a month. Another argument in favor of replacing reeds regularly is the fact that they get overly saturated with oil in time.
